Upgrading My 2 yr old PC

#1JRTIGHE141Posted 8/24/2013 5:49:51 AM
PC specs are:
MSI P67A-GD53 | i5 2500k | 4GB Corsair XMS3 | Asus DirectCU 6870 | 2x 500GB HDDs | XFX 650w PSU.... all running on a single 1080p monitor.

I'm planning on not buying a PS4 (my chosen next-gen console) at launch and will instead upgrade my PC for a fraction of the cost until I want to buy a PS4.

I know I probably need another 4GB of RAM, but I'm wondering whether it would be worth buying a second 6870 to run in X-Fire or to sell my 6870 and get a newer GPU?

Budget is about maximum 150. This is not including the money I would get for selling my 6870.

Thoughts?

Considering all the pirated Rosetta Stone software, I'd expect you to have a much better grasp on the English language.

what game cant you play? maybe you want to wait.

personally id prefer the single card, but if you can get a used 6870 for cheap then hey.

and 4gb of ram is cheap

For 150, I think another 6870 and stick of RAM will be your best bet. You'd sell your 6870 for maybe 80? Can't see any single card <200 that would be better than 2 6870s.

EDIT: Actually, you could pick up a 2gb 7870 if you sold your 6870, and whilst it would be a bit weaker than 2 6870s, you won't run into any xfire issues, will run quiter/cooler, and has that extra 1gb of VRAM which will only get more important with future titles.

The 8gb is an easy upgrade, the video card is the hard part. I don't have experience with xfire, but I love my SLI setup. You have to work out how much you can get a 2nd card for, or how much you can sell your current card for, and work out how much of a budget you have left, and if the upgrade will be worth it. Might want to upgrade the memory and just wait until the next gen of cards. I never go up a generation, I either skip a gen or SLI a mid range card.

Yeah, if you Crossfire two 6870s, you'll only have 1GB of VRAM to make use of. Not good.

So if I upgraded my RAM to 8GB (costing around 30) you'd recommend selling my 6870 (which would get me around 60, and buying a new GPU for about 170? What would be the best GPU for 180?

I recommend you hold on to the 6870 and wait until next gen. I don't see why you need to upgrade so soon.

It's always best to wait if you can wait

I don't think HD 6870 CF is a great idea. Possible lack of VRAM aside, AMD' doesn't use VLIW4/VLIW5 for their cards anymore. AMD's optimizations going forward will be for their GCN architectures.
