old motherboard, one ram slot has no.... levers?

I'm dealing with an old motherboard I want to upgrade for a friend but one of the ram slots doesn't have those things you push down to get the ram stick out. Only one of them does. I have tried just pulling the other one out but it won't budge. Is it possible it's there for good or can I just get the pliers and go to town on it (without damaging the mobo of course).

It's only 256mb and I wanna upgrade to two 512 sticks.

If you don't care about damaging the ram that you're pulling out then yes go to town with a pair of pliers. It won't hurt the motherboard as long as you're pulling them straight out and they remain perpendicular to the motherboard. However if you don't want the RAM you're pulling out to be damaged either then I would suggest wrapping a rubber glove around the "teeth" of the pliers so they don't scratch the RAM. And of course make sure you're not grabbing onto any components on the RAM; just grab onto the RAM's circuit board.
