Gonna get it later. Are there any issues I should be aware of?

Nothing I've had. I'm playing on 64-bit and literally just stopped playing a game of mine a couple minutes ago using the Stainless Steel mod.

Alright, thanks guys.

Recommend the stainless steel mod for a first timer, or should I go vanilla?

Stainless Steel makes the game significantly harder. Play vanilla for a bit before jumping into any mod.

Also remember Rome 2 comes out next week or something.

Stainless steel is awesome but play vanilla before jumping in. Third Age is good and so is Broken Crescent if your prefer a more Middle Eastern theme. There is also De Bello Mundi if you're impatient for Rome like me.

A full campaign? I'll be honest, I've probably put in a couple hundred hours of Medieval 2 and Rome over the past many years, but never finished a campaign. Just play vanilla until you're quite comfortable with all the mechanics, then get Stainless Steel or any of the things that DividingSolid recommended.

ok

well, don't listen to anyone who says to turtle or make you faction wealthy by "farming and mining etc"

it's called Total War, not Total Bore

you will make more money by annexing the other factions, try to take one stronghold/town each turn

cavalry rules in vanilla, no matter what faction you are. i'm not an expert of this game (like i am of RPGs), and i still pwned all on default difficulty mainly with cavalry

my conquering English general was like 60 when he died, he had like 8xp and Dread off the charts. he conquered 3/4s of the map almost single-handedly (hiring expert mercs to keep numbers up etc).

in one battle with him, i deployed 20 men (generals bodyguard) against 500 foes. his lone unit killed one half of the enemy, imprisoned the other half then massacred the whole of Paris.

the point? vanilla is pretty easy. play on the hardest difficulty and don't save scum.
