For 1440p...

#1hokkendirePosted 8/27/2013 6:21:50 AM
Just received a new 27" 1440p monitor and now I am looking to upgrade my GPU.

I currently have a twin frozr 7950, and I missed the sale this weekend on it sadly. Problem is my current build only has a HX650 power supply, so I fear I might not have enough to crossfire without having to upgrade that too as well with increases thee overall cost. OR should I just pony up the extra money for a 780?

I know the 7950 has 3 free games, but I either own or not interested in what is offered at the moment.

Your HX650 will support a second 7950 without issue.

thank you, just every google search said that the psu recommended was at least 850, I know it depends on quality but I will give it a shot thanks.

850W would just be silly :) A normal gaming load will never top 300W. If you're stress testing, it might, but nobody does that, plus the CPU is in a low state of activity when using something like Furmark, so it hardly matters... and even if you were stress testing the CPU and both GPUs, it still would be fine unless you have some crazy overclock on the CPU and some crazy overvolt on the GPUs. If you're a normal, average user, you have nothing to worry about with your HX650.

A good quality 650W PSU is better than a bad quality/no-name 850W PSU

Currently using 2 gtx660 with a Corsair 650w, has performed perfect the last year. Just got myself a 1440p as well, it runs very well.

Congrats on the 1440p monitor! They really are nice.

I don't really think the 780 is a good value. Almost every other option gives more bang for the buck.

If I were in your position, I'd be looking at 2 options:

A) Sell the 7950 and use the money towards a different solution (single ATI/Nvidia card or a SLI setup)

B) Get a second 7950 to Crossfire with and sell the 3 games you get with it to effectively lower the cost.

I am personally not comfortable with the idea of Crossfire right now, because I've seen so many complaints about stuttering with it. Sure, they might eventually fix the drivers so it isn't much of a problem, but on the other hand, it has been a problem for so long that part of me wonders if they really care about getting it fixed any time soon.

Do you have the HX650 v1 or v2?

Correct me if I am wrong. My v2 only seems to have two connectors for PCI-E.. and you need 4 for crossfire?
