My issue with PC gaming

#11kobalobasileusPosted 8/27/2013 3:24:06 PM
TC's point USED to be my big issue with PC gaming. But since Steam keeps things up-to-date and can automatically fix corrupted installs (validate game cache), and GOG pre-configures DOSbox for me, I don't have anything to complain about anymore.

A console can play a limited # of games on one configuration.

A PC can play thousands of games on an infinite number of configurations.

That's just the way it goes, sometimes you have to tinker with your system to get it running right. I'd rather have that than the alternative of being locked down to one generation of games working on my platform.

This, so much this. All I've heard in this thread is: I don't know how to configure my PC and I'm too lazy to Google, I have slow internet so It's steams fault, and I'm too poor to afford a $50 harddrive.

no nobody has said any of that. you're just a neck beard.

Plenty have said this, if I'm a neck beard you're a mouth breather.

I agree there are more benefits outweighing the negatives in PC gaming, however for some like me who is starting to find limited time to game due to work, it can be a pain to spend the majority of the time fixing the game instead of playing it.

I know that feel. I had wanted to test out Sleeping Dogs and GRiD 2 before work for a few minutes but they both had issues starting up.It just messed up my whole mood

Most of the problems I encounter and not related to devloper patches but problems related to stuff like Games For Windows Live bugs, errors with the redistrbutable files etc.

I will admit that compatibility with older games can be tough/complicated sometimes... for example, I have been completely unable to get XIII working on my machine even with following the directions online. That sucks, cuz I've really been wanting to play that game again. I was able to install it enough to have the menu screen, but starting a new game crashed every time.

Still, compatibility with older games on PC is far superior to that of consoles. I can't play PS2 games on my PS3, but I *can* play PS2-era PC games on my PC. And PS-era. And on, and on...

True, compatibility can be troublesome. Like trying to get manhunt to work on windows 7 took me some time. It feels good though when you finally get the troubleshooting right and a game runs flawless.

This is why I prefer consoles. With consoles, I spend 100% of the time gaming. With PC, i spend almost half of the time getting the damn game to work right. It can be very frustrating and tedious at times. If it weren't for amazing steam sales and humble bundles, I wouldn't even bother with PC gaming at all. I laugh at the notion of paying $50 for a steam game that may or may not work and you could never sell or lend to anyone. I can't believe people pay full price for digital only games.

But....every Steam game works?

If it doesn't work, well, you should probably learn how computers work?

(And protip, $50 isn't fullprice when the console equivalent is $60, and Steam would refund a game that doesn't work derp)

Mild inconvenience to spend hours figuring out how to get a game to work? How dumb are you? And I'm sure I know more about computers than you do. Knowing about computers doesn't change the fact that games just don't run like they should.

exactly what are you playing that you're having trouble with, cause it's been years since i had even close to that amount of trouble with a game.
