Avast full scan Window Defender virus

#1BlackmonPosted 8/27/2013 4:25:12 PM
Hello everyone.

Before leaving for work this morning, I decided to let Avast and Malbarebytes do a full thorough scan on all my drives.

Malwarebytes didn't find anything but Avast found 2 viruses. I already deleted one of the viruses but Avast can't delete the 2nd one because it can't find the folder.

The folder is under C:/ Programdata\microsoft\windows defender\defenition updates\{some numbers and letters}\mpengine.dll

Is it safe to delete this dll file? Or is it a false positive? I know most of the stuff in programdata are essential for windows to run. I'm trying to find out if this is one of the important files or if it's nothing to worry about.

Also, how exactly can I access the Programdata folder? I'm on Windows 7.

Thank you and have a nice day.

Probably a false positive picking up defender definitions.

If they asked how I died tell them: Still angry.

Thanks a lot. Looking around after searching for mpengine.dll, it seems some people got the same result with avast and it seems to be a false positive and most just say to not worry about it.

Thanks a lot. I thought it something that's hard to delete.
