Is it possible to update a backup without recopying everything?

I plan on getting an external hard drive soon to back up all of my data on, which is about 1.6TB at the moment for the drive I plan on backing up. After the initial backup, which I imagine will take quite a long time to do, will it be possible to update that backup without redoing the whole thing? This is probably a really stupid question, but I just want to make sure. So, for example, if a week after getting it I want to have it update any and all new or changed files, is that possible without manually choosing everything for it to back up? Thanks in advance!

Depends on the backup tool. For example, Windows Backup is incremental.
