The obvious course of action is to take a tire iron to this guy's kneecaps

This.

Contrary to popular belief, asking questions is not the best way to get answers. Tire iron to the kneecaps is the best way to get answers.

But isn't an answer without a question merely a statement???

Since you are running on integrated graphics doesn't that mean you have shared memory? The total amount of vram is somewhat dependent on how much actual ram you have?

oh is it?

You might also have an option in the BIOS to change the amount of ram to allocate to vram.

OMG, will this terrible crisis never end?!

From my experiences, there's no varying amount of VRAM depending on usage. Your laptop definitely does have an integrated GPU, which means the RAM is shared, as previous posters have said. The amount of "VRAM" depends on the amount of RAM you have installed though. So it makes sense that you're seeing less, if your computer is only reporting 2 GB of RAM.

Now, can you take a picture of the memory card slot? I want to see if you're missing one of your RAM slots. Almost all modern machines have at least two RAM slots, and if one of the chips is loose, that would definitely be causing the lesser RAM amount to show in your system.

And "the guy" was speaking the truth the VRAM is soldered to the graphics board, but this isn't your case, so that fact is irrelevant.

no... you're the one that looks stupid. But I will admit that TC needs to shut up about the vram... because that's an irrelevant detail, and it does kind of make you look stupid to the person who was messing with your computer.

Theres a sticker on his ram that says 2gb. He clearly posted a picture of his sysreqlabs showing 4gb, and then 2gb. Unless there are 2, 2gb sticks in his laptop and one of them has become unseated, he has been ripped off.

basically, TC... make sure that you do not in fact have 2 ram modules and on of them isnt in properly... if there's only one, and it is 2gb, then show this guy your two pictures, and then call the cops. Don't negotiate... just call the cops.

It's also possible to find out what ram the computer shipped with, maybe. You could find that, and compare it to the ram you have, and if they don't match up there's another nail in the coffin.
