whats the point of early access?

#1g_lethalPosted 8/29/2013 1:48:15 AM
I always thought of a demo as "early access", now it just seems like devs are blatantly grabbing for cash.

why not just release one level from the game as a normal demo and let the players pick that apart instead? as fast as message boards react now a dev could get all the info they need right? so why charge for an obviously unfinished product.

i guess people are confused what a demo is nowadays though sadly

saints row initiation station - not a demo

assault android cactus - awesome demo

just seems like each year some new borderline devious, yet "could be a good idea" plan pops up to rob gamers of their money, at this rate soon they're gonna be charging for ideas..........oh wait?

So did all you people come from a business meeting today and it was concluded that you're all going to take shifts crying on gamefaqs about a non-issue?

Or demo's are getting less common because it's harder and more expensive to make as the scope of games increase.

For example, open world games require you essentially make an entirely different sub game with boundaries otherwise people have access to the entire game. Sometimes people hack into the demo and gain access to full game anyway.

Why not just give people what you have so far and charge them to get a peak. In turn they'll spread info and do advertising for you.

It's not like they're forcing us to play these Alpha/Beta build games. You have a choice of purchasing it. Considering these early versions are released you have enough time to gather all the info you want before purchasing the fully completed much more expensive version of the game. Unless you just have to be cool and get everything when it's super new so you can say you were first.

Oh, you thought they made this game for you? You clearly bought the wrong game.

It's kind of obvious, and I don't really know how you managed to misconstrue it that badly.

I don't really feel like spelling it out, so take this as a bump you don't really need.

It's a pretty bad topic when TP is spot on.

Stop whining.

Another one? Seriously? Did the other two get removed or something? (I'm not going to go looking for it).

If you don't like early access, don't buy it... if enough people feel the same as you, then it'll fail and steam will quit doing it.

If everyone likes it though, guess what? That means you're just going to have to deal with it.

It's hardly a non issue. It encourages game companies to use bad practices that harm the consumer.

g_lethal, don't bother arguing with TimePharaoh, he's utterly immune to facts and reasoning, and would have been banned long ago if the mods here took their duties seriously.
