Why aren't RPG stats ever a reasonable reflection of the character's physique?

You've got this tiny little elf girl who will have like 18 STR, and then you have this hulking male orc who, if you're lucky, will have a +2 STR bonus for a total of maybe 20 STR. WTF? If these creatures actually existed the orc would be AT LEAST 7-8x stronger than the elf girl, so if the elf girl's base STR is represented by 18, then the orc's should be like 130 or so. Why is it never like this?

Stats are based on balancing game play, not realism.

If you read P&P roleplaying books, you will find that the stats are very abstract. Strength doesn't neccesariy only mean pure muscle strength.

There's also the issue of muscle density. Like how reptiles are considerably stronger than their size suggests.

Also, Chess is a game of skill much like all gameplay only video games. So it is pretty mindless if you think about it.-mtjormitch

P&P is about coming up with a very simple game system and B.S. your way in justifying the reason for the stats.

The thing that drive me nuts the most is how a boss will deal damage that is comparable to your own but has 100 times as many hit points than you do.

That's why RPGs are evolving and MMOs have been pushing the evolution. They still have either more HP or more damage, but the difficulty has been shifting towards movement and strategy.

One of the reasons I like MMOs
