Why did EA cut their ties with valve?

I know it has to do with valve's policies regarding dlc content . but what I don't understand is why EA did not take the same route that Ubisoft did. still allowing their games/dlc on Steam while
simultaneously building and refining their drm service client.

This is what I feel, Iam not saying EA can "never" compete with steam but, That would take a long long while considering EA's business practices need to change. When they first launched Origin they assumed it would take steam's place without much of a fight.
