Buying by tomorrow. Will the response time be an issue with the U2312HM?

I would not recommend a 16:10 monitor these days. You'll get a larger viewing area on an equivalently sized 16:9 monitor in most games and movies.

No, rated response times on monitors really don't mean much as they are almost always gray-to-gray and are never really that low in practice. Several people on this board have that monitor and have no issues, I'm sure it is perfectly fine if that is the one you want.

See for yourself:

http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2312hm.htm

These guys were very satisfied with it's performance from a lag perspective:

The input lag of the U2312HM was incredibly low, and in fact the lowest we have ever seen from a TFT display.

... and they're very detailed in their evaluations/reviews, couldn't hurt to take a look before you pull the trigger.

I beg to differ! The only games that are gimped by 16:10 are FPSes (or any game played from a 1st/3rd person perspective). RTSs, strategy games, and anything else that FOV doesn't apply to all benefit from the additional vertical screen space.

Also be aware that most movies aren't shot in 16:9, they're usally in a format even wider than 16:9/1.78... you'll end up with black bars anyways.

Please note I'm horribly biased towards 16:10 though so take my words with liberal amounts of salt =)

Or you could just watch the movie in 16:9 with black bars and have more vertical space for everything else? Same with games, and play them in a window for even easier multi-tasking? And then in everything with vertical FOV just have an overall better experience?

I don't know I'm totally biased. =) I know some people must have everything perfectly full screen. TC, just make sure you get something based on your own opinion and not someone else's.
