Should I upgrade from 7850 to the 760?

#1EWRNataPosted 8/30/2013 12:47:43 PM
I go from one brand to the other and after buying the 7850 I almost want to put my 460 back in, which now I'm reading isn't much of an upgrade anyway. So clearly I don't know as much as I thought I did. This time I will ask for some help.

I want to upgrade my PC slowly and thinking of starting with a new GPU. Is the 760 a big step up from the 7850? Also is my motherboard and CPU holding me back?

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128445

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Quad-Core Processor

For the record I built the PC about 2 years ago on a budget... Don't judge

Thanks for the help!

It's not a very big upgrade at all.

I would suggest waiting for the next batch of AMD cards or waiting even longer for the new Nvidia cards next year some time

If your mobo and PSU can handle it, just grab another 7850. If not wait a little longer. It's not like the 7850 is a terrible card. 760 wouldn't be that big of a jump.

Looks like your mobo could do Crossfire, if your PSU can handle it grab another 7850. Cheaper and a better upgrade.

It's a micro board so it can do crossfire but really it can't because there is no room for another card. And this damn card makes Borderlands 2 run like crap sometimes, maybe I just have the setting way to high. BF3 and Tomb Raider run great, so I can't figure it out. But I guess I will wait. Maybe slowly up grade my mobo and cpu.

If you want to upgrade your cpu, mobo and flu just save the money and build a new computer. Sell your old one for whatever you can get for it or give it to someone.

That's what I am doing but slowly... I'm impatient. I'd rather buy a mobo and cpu together and then build off that over the next year.

Not me. I've already upgraded my 3.5 year old GPU but I want to hold on to my CPU/Mobo till they literally give up and die.

Borderlands 2 runs poorly because your CPU is a bit of a stinker.

Upgrading your GPU on that CPU would be a huge waste.

The 7850 should be able to max it with good frames. It's time to realize your CPU has got to go.

Btw, those benchmarks are really old, probably. Look at how the 570 does compared to the 7950. There's no way that's true today.

Not to say your CPU still can't game. It can, if you don't mind never maintaining 60FPS, but even a 7850 doesn't have room to breath. That's getting old.
