The PC in my bedroom is hooked up to a ~15 year old A/V receiver, which is then connected to ~20 year old mini-system speakers... works better than it has any right to IMHO (with liberal EQ tweaking of course).

Not sure if this is considered ghetto or just a case of Frankenstein-style repurposing. Waste not want not I always say!

I'm fairly certain you can buy a halfway decent set of 2.1 speakers at Wal-Mart/Target etc. for $20-40 or so.

I recently bought a set of years old but first hand Wharfedale S20030 stereo speakers for 3.99 from an Argos clearance shop. They're a hell of a lot better than the crappy Logitech LS11 stereo speakers they replaced. They always made a horrible crackling sound if you dared to turn them up above half maximum volume.

a 5.1 set up made from a pair of 17 year old boxey, oval-y speakers in front,
a pawn shop guitar amp in center, early 2000's logitech speakers tacked to the wall behind me, and a 200 watt peavey bass amp for a sub.

It works surprisingly well.

Buy two of these

plug both pairs into your PC, and now you have a 4.0 quadraphonic system.

I had a set of 30 or so year old or so box speakers with a stereo in my room, with an also quite old CD player plugged into it. Not really ghetto, but pretty old. I never did plug it into my computer, though.

I use a headset that is falling apart, but still works. The wire got stiff and is breaking, but there's duct tape on it.

My monitor has speakers in it, but they are connected through a bad audio cable so it sometimes cuts in and out. I just bought a new one to replace it, though.

My computer speakers are not ghetto, and I have both the integrated speakers in my monitor which is actually decent and $200 Audioengine A2 2.0 powered desktop speakers.
Such is your fate.
