Difference between Origin and Steam?

#1mizukage2Posted 8/30/2013 10:05:33 PM
Besides the obvious difference in available libraries, is there any notable service difference between the two?

Can you get around it by running it in offline mode?

Origin is tied to that company that has won the"Worst Company in America" award the last 2 years in a row. It's also the company that just made a public statement that "we don't offer single player experiences."

I don't really want to give them any of my money.

Origin is probably better than Steam on a purely functional level. Unfortunately, it has a poor selection, looks like arse, and is associated with video game Hitler.

Because they are jealous. Honestly I don't see why anyone hates EA. I been playing FIFA over many years, and they support it every week for free. They update the rosters, stats, give you weekly challenges, and they have a really good customer support, yet for some reason EA gets hated.

As much as I hate EA, this is not any different from what Valve said earlier, and it was mistaken in exactly the same way as what Valve said. Apparently, nobody in the upper levels of the games industry has half a brain when it comes to clearly stating what it is they mean.

Peter Moore later clarified:
"Today, most games are "online" in some way, shape or form," he said. "Many games connect in online multiplayer modes; others include online services which allow for periodic content updates, sharing stats or achievements or connecting with friends; and others are games downloaded through digital delivery methods like Origin or the App Store."

"What that does NOT mean is that every game we ship will require an online connection. Many, if not most, of our games include single-player, offline modes that you can play entirely without an Internet connection, if you so choose. We know thatís something many of our players want, and we will continue to deliver it."

Much in the same way Gabe had to clarify:
"I think what we're trying to talk about is the fact is not that we're not thinking about single-player games - Portal 2 I think is a pretty good example of what we've learned over the years in terms of how to create those [single-player] experiences.

"It's more that we think that we have to work harder in the future. That entertainment is inherently increased in value by having it be social, by letting you play with your friends, by recognizing that you're connected with other people.

"Single-player is great, but we also have to recognize that you have friends and wanted to have that connected as well.

"It's not about giving up on single-player at all. It's saying we actually think there are a bunch of features and capabilities that we need to add into our single-player games to recognize the socially connected gamer. Every gamer has instant messaging, every gamer has a Facebook account. If you pretend that that doesn't exist, you're ignoring the problems that you're taking on.

"It's single-player plus, not 'no more single-player'."

Like I said, Valve said it first so what I don't get is why Peter Moore didn't learn from Gabe's mistake and clarify the statement first rather than say "single player is dead" and then later have to go back and say "by dead I mean every single player game will have some online feature in it...not that we're not making single player any more".

He didn't say "single player is dead" but that's what everyone took it to mean...
