Why is Steam not in more regions?

#1rettam542Posted 9/1/2013 7:56:58 AM
They could make a lot more sales if they price accordingly to various regions like cheaper in poorer areas or more expensive in richer areas. It could help in curbing piracy. Not everyone can shell out 50 usd for a new game but, for example, 1000 indian rupees would be more reasonable to indians and gamers would pay rather than pirate for the convenience and official support and servers.

Then Cheap US/EU gamers would use a DNS and a credit card to buy games cheaper.

This is why we can't have nice things.
This also borks the trading economy, why buy a game through steam when you can buy it for 10$ cheaper through a reseller.

Wouldn't region-locking solve this? If a game's region id doesn't match with the ip, it won't be downloaded or work.

Ips can be changed/faked.

Also, region locking is not a good thing, for anyone. It doesn't help the dev's much either.

I see. Looks like there is no win-win solution for this. Thanks for the input.

That's ok. It's a shame people in some countries can't afford games, in an ideal world, we could have regional pricing, but valve would have to put a lot in to make it work.

Also, if those people want to buy PC games cheap, how can they even afford gaming computers?
Those who can afford gaming computers can usually afford games in those countries.
