Anything I can do with this laptop problem? (it won't boot due to corrupt file)

Hello Everyone.

My nephew wanted me to fix his laptop. It won't boot because something that windows needs is either corrupted or missing. Here's what it says when it's trying to boot:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM.
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

The problem is, they don't have the CD and this is a very old laptop. It still has Windows XP.

I tried going to system restore through booting but it just gives me the same message.

Anything else I can or is he SOL and needs to buy a new OS?

Thank you and have a nice day.

Find a copy online and use that to repair it.
