A used GTX 690 or a new GTX 780?

#1capgamerPosted 9/1/2013 7:55:44 PM
I decided to take the plunge and buy parts for a new PC this weekend, but I haven't yet fully decided on the graphics card I want. I think I want to go Nvidia, and I'm going to wait until the end of this month because it seems like there is a good chance that the price will drop.

I've been mostly considering the 780 because I want to "future proof" my PC as much as possible and grab another 780 for SLI a couple years down the line when the price has dropped.

But... I was looking at some benchmarks and it looks like the 690 GTX has significantly better performance in general. It's also more expensive new, but basically the same price as the 780 used.

Do you folks have any opinions on the matter? :0

Do you want 2GB of VRAM or 3GB of VRAM?

Don't buy a used 690.

Don't buy a 690 period.

The 780 isn't "as powerful" as a 690, but it's better overall. And SLIing them in the future will be beastly as all hell. The 690 is basically 2 undercloked 680 chips on one card

From what I can tell the main difference is that higher VRAM helps in multi-monitor gaming, so I'd probably be fine with 2 as I would game on 2 monitors at most.

Go with the 780.

780. The 690 will run into a VRAM/bandwidth bottleneck.

Yeah I think I'll do that. I'll just transfer my old GTX 260 over to my new computer in the meantime. Well, assuming it's actually still better than the integrated graphics.

780 is pretty overpriced right now. I'd wait for the 9000 series from AMD to provide some competition.

This, the time to buy 780s at this price was launch as you were at least getting months of having the undisputed best Mainstream card on the market. At this point you are paying a premium that probably won't exist in a couple months.
