What's the difference between a video capture kit/unit and software like Fraps?

#1VoelgerPosted 9/2/2013 3:52:40 PM
My friends and I want to create a YouTube channel where we upload our video of our games.

Why buy a 150$ video capture kit? Why not just use Fraps or bandiwire?

What are their benefits? Frankly, have programs replaced their worth?

I ask because I saw an article on them on the home page of ign.

I'm no expert, but I have heard one key advantage capture cards have over software is that they are a hardware component, and therefore create way less of a performance hit.

I remember GopherVids talking about that once.

Do they come with a hdd to store the videos? Do they come with editing software?

A program like fraps captures uncompressed video so it looks perfect but takes up a ton of space and it affects your fps. A capture card that can encode the video through its hardware doesn't affect your fps and file size is smaller but video quality is not as good.

The quality is still more than good enough for 1080p youtube videos. And you won't be uploading a 30 minute FRAPS video to youtube unless you've got an absurd upload speed.

No, no one on the planet has a youtube account where they upload videos of games today. You're a groundbreaker.

Recently I found some freeware called "Open Broadcaster Software" which has been working pretty well for me so far. An hour and 40 minute video @ 720p and 30 frames per second came out at less than a gigabyte:
