Can I tether a laptop (win 7) to a desktop and get Internet access?

#1VoelgerPosted 9/4/2013 5:14:57 AM
It's a desktop at work and my personal laptop. Both are windows 7.

The laptop has wifi, but at work the network is locked Down. Is there any way I can tether the laptop via USB, Ethernet, etc... To the desktop and get Internet access since the desktop is already on the network.

Enable Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop, then link them together with a network crossover cable (might work with just a basic ethernet cable.)

EDIT: It most likely WILL work with just an ethernet cable, I'd just try that first.

I used to do that with my PS3, works fine. I don't remember what I had to do to set it up, I don't think I did much? I think I went to network connections, selected both wired and wireless adapters, right click, and bridge connection. Not sure if there is an easier or better way.

The above answers are accurate.
That said, most companies have policies against bringing personal devices and connecting them to the corporate network... there's probably a reason why your company's wireless network is locked down, and that same reason is probably why you shouldn't try to circumvent that.
In the end, I don't care since it's not my network, but if it were my network, I'd detect you, find you and report you to management :)

I did that with my 360 in my room. Router's downstairs, connected with the laptop, eithernet cable to the 360, voila! Of course you gotta do the settings thing but the previous poster already explained how.
