Hybrid hard drive to replace a failing traditional one?

#1StarksPosted 9/4/2013 6:42:49 AM
Current drive is getting a lot of reallocated sectors, I/O errors, and feels slow as balls

Thinking about picking up this for my birthday in a few days

http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Laptop-Solid-Hybrid-ST500LM000/dp/B00B99JU5M/

Couple of questions though:

1. Does 5400 vs 7200 even matter anymore? I have a regular 7200 and the SSHD is 5400 yet promises to be 80% faster than a regular 5400

2. How fast would the 5400RPM 64MB SSHD compare to the classic 7200RPM 32MB Momentus XT?

3. Are SSHDs worth it compared to SSD or HDD+SSDboot laptops? I have spare bays to do either

4. Anything I can do salvage performance on my current drive?

I would get an SSD for the primary drive no matter what, especially since you have an extra bay that you can put in an HDD later for extra space if you need it. Only reason to get a hybrid drive is if you only have one drive bay and absolutely need a lot of storage.

I don't have extra bays per se...

1x unused optical drive that I can remove and get an adapter for
1x mPCIe slot used by wifi/bt card
1x eSATA port

Only a 64mb SSD in the hybrid... I thought they were larger.

I thought they all had around 8gb of memory.

Oh, then if you need the capacity, get the hybrid drive.

Apparently they are pretty good for gaming since most console ported game load the same 10 files over and over, these get cached to the SSD portion of the drive and then give SSD like performance.

Update: My drive crapped out yesterday and all my birthday money planning went out of the window. Ended up buying a larger model of the SSHD and I'm now getting buyers remorse for not doing a 2-drive setup for the same amount of money.

Really worried that the 5400rpm platter is going to hold everything back. Should I really expect my games to make use of the 8GB NAND?
