The most boring yet essential upgrade

#1fatboy44Posted 9/4/2013 12:42:31 PM
Well I just replaced my aging and sketchy OCZ stealthXstream 500W, that was barely enough to power my system, with a shiny new SeaSonic 750W. Though an incredibly boring upgrade at least I can rest assured that I went be having any issues with power.

I have never owned an "80 Plus Bronze certified" PSU before. Will I noticed any improvement in terms of energy efficiency and electricity bills? Its hard to get past the marketing gimmicks that manufacturers use.

Looking at the bright side, you will get tons of use out of it. You may go through 6 motherboards and 12 video cards in the next 20+ years, but you'll probably still be using the same PSU unless they radically change the connection types.

Hmm, any other benefits with the 80 plus?

Well, the higher the efficiency, the less heat, therefore the less noise, generally. Outside of that, "high-end" efficiency is often just a marketing gimmick, and the higher price you pay for higher efficiency may never be offset by the electricity which that higher efficiency saves.
