I need a bluetooth adapter that can manage 4 or more controllers.

Must be USB.

use wires.

The dongles they use for Wii emulator called dolphin. saw a mention on bluetooth multi controller on the dolphin site forums somewhere. Ill look for the post again.
I remember it being a bigger dongle. stay away from those small one's for multi controller.
EDIT: look for class 1 with antenna

bluetooth supports up to 16... or 32 connections.

this is what I have, and I've never had any issues connecting my 4 ds3 controllers to it. I can't speak for wiimotes though.
