Windows 8.1 isn't that bad. Much better than 8.

Windows 8 has a much better file explorer and better DPI scaling support than Windows 7 as well.

It's too bad all the whining about the start menu has only served to clutter my taskbar with a useless start button in 8.1, and no way to disable it.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the start menu is dead. Sure, the start screen isn't a lot better, but at least Microsoft is finally trying new things, something they should have started doing with Windows 98.

Yeah, I too hope that I can turn off the start button. True PC MASTER RACE users like ourselves should be using the Windows key on your Keyboard.

Why Windows 8 is bad period in any form.

There is no reason for it to exist as it brings nothing of value and certainly takes away value.

How does it take away value? It boots/shuts down faster than Windows 7, its system-wide search function is vastly superior, and (although it isn't a problem for responsible, sensible users) its malware protection is better. The OS as a whole is much snappier than W7.

But what if they both have an SSD?

I get that, but once you get used to the Ribbon, it's a lot more efficient/faster. It just takes a little while to get used to.

Ribbon is actually really good and totally makes sense once you get used to it, its kinda jarring at first though.

Pretty much the same could be said for the whole Windows 8, It was weird to begin with but I love it now i'm used to it and wouldn't want to use any other version of Windows.
