Battle For Middle Earth 2 + expansion have become my favorites, although C&C is classic as well.

I had to vote for Warcraft (Warcraft 3 specifically). So many memories of playing that with friends.

Command and Conquer, Starcraft, and Age of Empires are all in my top 5 RTS series though.

I reiterate my preference for SupCom, and by extension it's predecessor TA.

To this day I don't think any other RTS has radar and artillery mechanics that match that of TA/SupCom... so satisfying to turtle up, rush T3 radar (or stealth spy planes) and big guns, then pound the enemy base into submission!

I hate games when you can turtle up for the whole game and win.

Most of those games are good don't get me wrong, but only a few of them hold a candle to Starcraft. It just has the best game feel of any RTS, and that's before you consider that it has extremely memorable units with differing functions, one of the few good RTS storylines, and the best multiplayer experience with so much custom map variety you can find entire others games in them. Only R:TW comes close to it but its not an option on the list.

Supreme commander just felt so bland an uninspired; it lacked art. The large scale was great but I prefer TW games for large scale combat.

CoH I have played a bit of and it has some great concepts but your troops just aren't deadly enough for it to feel like a real war. They seem to have like a 90-95% miss rate which really puts me off.

Sins of a solar empire is more like a 4x game mashed into an RTS so I don't feel its as directly comparable. Personally I don't like it too much, the little bit of it I did play it felt pretty generic. I managed to put 90+ hours in Sword of the Stars, another 4x space strategy but more like TW with turn based campaign portions and I liked that game much better.
