-Company of Heroes is objectively one of the best RTSes around, I think, but I just could never get into the WWII setting. I'd definitely love to see more RTSes model themselves after these games though.

Honestly I don't see how it can be considered one of the best RTSes, when it fact the population of this game is now worse than many older RTS games.

No, no. Don't make the mistake of equating popularity with quality. Do you honestly think Call of Duty is the best FPS around? That The Sims is the best series available on PC?

I call Company of Heroes one of the best RTSes around because of its strategic and tactical depth. Combat in that game is more than just a-move, or stutter-stepping to victory. Cover is a factor. Suppressive fire is a factor. Vehicles are not just ignorable throw-away units, but actually need counters.
Terran changes as the battle goes on, causing actual gameplay effects, like buildings (that you can garrison) collapsing and craters forming. When vehicles get destroyed, they leave burnt shells behind, which you can use for cover (along with the previously-mentioned craters).

There's more, but that's a good outline for now. I really wish we'd get more RTSes that would model themselves after Company of Heroes. I love the ideas behind it, but just can't get into it because of the WWII setting.
...of course, I wish we'd get more RTSes, period. Kind of a dying genre these days.

While I kind of agree (I mean, EU4 is my game of the year right now), but none of those are considered traditional RTSes. They're more... "Grand Strategy"

I was going through my box of old games this weekend and I came across and old favorite that I had forgotten about and hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread...

Homeworld!

This was a great space based RTS that involved everything from fighters all the way up to battleship and carrier class capital ships (and even larger if you count the motherships). It is still unique in that you need to think in all three dimensions instead of being confined to 2D plane as is typical in most other RTS offerings. The game also had so many different strategies you could employ so it always felt fresh.

Do you want to make a task force based around a carrier with destroyer escorts, complemented by squadrons of fighters and bombers to project force? No problem!

Or rather, you would prefer to stick with the behemoths and have several battleships with flak frigate escorts to keep the annoying gnats off your back? No problem!

You can even go beam spam with groups of ion/beam frigates coupled with lancer corvettes for that whiz bang niftiness that comes from "watching C-beams glitter in the dark" ;)

Anyways, I felt it was a disservice that this game hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread so I humbly submit it for your review.

Oh and BTW...

Warcraft because Warcraft 3 had the best campaign of any RTS, imo.

You sure it isnt, "whoever gets tanks first wins?" because cant play the game without the AI always getting tanks way before I do.

Sticky bombs are very nice. Just two or three thrown on the back of their tank and BOOM.
