If this is only for gaming and general performance, get the i5. i7 won't help with anything at all.

That's not true at all. It will help in nearly every case.

The proper question is will it help enough to justify the increased cost.

And the answer is no.

It will not help with gaming at all. Seen any benchmarks lately?

As for the general performance of the computer, an i5, a couple decent RAM sticks, and an SSD are more than good enough. Getting an i7 will not make any real difference if you don't do stuff like heavy video editing and encoding.

The reasons for getting i7 are very specific at the moment.

Hyperthreading does help gaming, the game just needs to take advantage of more than four cores. Battlefield 3 and Crysis 3 have been shown to benefit from more than four cores/threads.

And since TC wants to use the PC for five years, HT is the more "future proof" option

BS. It tends to help in all games, even if only a tiny little bit, but it helps a lot more in some games (BF3, for example).

Thanks for all the answers, but iam a noob here, what deas Hyperthreading means?? It sounds that you guys mean that most games right now just dont use more than 4 cores, so getting more than that with an i7 would be pointless and for more money, but for 5 years who knows right.

Also would the i5 be a better cpu than the ps4 and xbox1 have??

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyper-threading
The gist of it is that you can have two threads per core instead of just one. It's not like having 8 actual cores, but your OS thinks it has 8 cores, and in applications that support it, it can make a significant difference.

Of course, but that doesn't really matter.

There's no point in making up stuff. There's a handful of games that support hyper-threading (and most of these games don't even need it at all) and they benefit from it well enough. Other games are either not affected or experience insignificant frame drops. Applications cannot use more than 4 threads if they are not coded to, that's common sense.

While the future proof argument is somewhat valid, An i5 will last him about just as long as an i7 if he overclocks. CPU's go a long way before they bottleneck the rig.

It's not worth it to buy an i7 on a computer built primarily for gaming. Period.
