I'm thinking about downloading Freespace 2 and Wing Commander 3.

While I do love the Wing Commander series, Freespace basically took what was best about every other space sim of the time and rolled it into one game.

Descent: Freespace was awesome because it was equal parts Wing Commander and X-Wing/Tie Fighter. It took the varied gun/missile loadouts from WC and combined it with the lovely shield management of X-Wing. Freespace 2 went even further by adding emphasis on beam based capital ship combat, IMHO taking inspiration from the Homeworld series. Yes I know they came out around the same time... coincidence? I think not!

Seems to me Volition is good at this, taking an established idea and polishing the hell out of it... Freespace and Saints Row being the best examples.

Freespace 2 has graphics mods and in general plays very solid. It also has a ton of campaign mods that adds plenty of new content. 6$ I spent on Fs2 was the best 6$ I ever spent.

FTL is in a different category because it doesn't focus on individual fighters but on large cruisers, so comparing it to Fs2 is like comparing a strategy game to an action game. Its a good game don't take me wrong but its gameplay is way too different from old space sims.

I preferred Wing Commander myself, but both series were amazingly strong. Though Freespace 2 ends on an unresolved note.
