The thing is - I would think somebody to be pretty naive if they think anything they send/receive over the internet or other electronic communication services is secure and cannot be seen, so they would likely communicate with more physical means... Will they bug public places with microphones next? They already have cameras watching everyone.

People may have assumed, but doesnt mean it was known by all.

When the whole NSA thing first blew up, I had always just assumed they had always been doing what they were accused of, or had the capability to. I would have been more surprised to find out that werent creepin on everyones info. It's almost expected. Because even if they werent doing it, you bet your ass other countries will/did if they can/could. Dont want to be behind on the times.
