Any good gaming laptops in the $500-600 range?

#1tscooktPosted 9/6/2013 6:58:00 AM
Portability is important to me and I've been doing some research on laptops, one that caught my eye is the:

HP ENVY Sleekbook 15.6" Laptop - 750GB Hard Drive - AMD Elite Quad-Core A10-5745M Accelerated Processor with AMD Radeon HD 8610G graphics
6GB DDR3 SDRAM
For multitasking power, expandable to 16GB.

I'm not computer savvy so I don't really know what to look for in the specs.

Is this a good choice or are there better gaming laptops out there in my price range?

Any advice is appreciated

No such thing as a gaming laptop for $600. The best you'll get are laptops that can play games at 720p and low settings. The card you listed in particular will only run games at 720p and low settings.

This is kinda what I was worried about. I'm going to be saving up 1200-1500 to build a powerful desktop rig but that's not going to happen for a while

So what is a realistic price for at least a decent gaming laptop?

This. Good performance costs money.

Around $800 you can usually start to see pretty good performance (around medium-high at 900p or even 1080p).

That's about the cheapest I would recommend. Stretching the budget a little more would get you an Alienware m14 or Sager 7352 each about $1000 with single 765ms.

Otherwise you are best off getting a thin laptop with integrated graphics as weak dedicated graphics cards are just not worth it for such an unsubstantial performance boost over integrated.

Where? I have never seen an asus with a 660m lower than $1000. It's why I never recommend them, especially when companies like Lenovo or Alienware offer the same for cheaper.
