Speakers are the best when you have your own place. I don't even own a pair of quality headphones, just some decent ones for my MP3 player. When I get a Rift I'll have to pick up a nice pair, though.

The problem with speakers is that they have to be set up properly in order to get the full benefit, and most people have no idea how to do this. If one is indeed able to set up speakers correctly, then a well chosen $100 pair of speakers is going to blow away an equally well chosen $100 set of headphones, the difference becoming increasingly large as the price goes up. Headphones are inherently a compromise, but often a necessary one (not pissing off room mates, etc.)

High-end, open-back headphones that rest comfortably on the head are a nice compromise.

I agree when it comes to jamming out. No headphone in the world will deliver anything close to my 18in Peavy PA speakers but on the flipside my PA can't deliver the detail and clarity that my Grado cans can.

Both have their place.

I do too. I hate wearing things on my head. I won't wear a hat, even in winter, because I hate the sensation. Headphones fall into that same category for me. Earbuds aren't really in the discussion, because even the best ones sound terrible.

I like 7.1 speakers. The rumble from the sub massages your balls through the chair.
