Will a 7850 suffice this next console generation?

Bottom line though, by the time that card cannot keep up to the consoles, there should be a much better card for not that much more money then, so you should be okay.

This.

I personally see my 7850 (2 GB @ 1050/1450) lasting for another 2-3 years, easily. At that point, I'll spend ~$600 on new RAM (Assuming DDR4 is out)/Mobo/CPU/GPU, which should last the rest of the console generation without issues.

PS4 has between a HD7850 and a HD7870 since it has 1152 stream processors. i think you are refering to the xbone which is supposed to be a HD7790 equivalent with only 768 shaders.

The Xbone only has 16 ROPs so its actually closer to a 7770

Any card that's equivalent or only slightly better will not age well compared to the PS4

If you're basing that off of the cards at the release of the 360, that isn't a wise or logical comparison. It's been explained.

They'll age fine. They won't keep par, but they won't age like the 7900 GTX, for example.

It's not similar in the slightest.

That should for the most part be true for AMD's series(provided AMD keeps up the driver support), but there's still features that aren't currently exposed in DirectX or OpenGL.

What was the equivalent of the 7850 when the 360 and PS3 went on sale?

Well the 360 and PS3 had high end cards at the time. PS4 and Xbone have mid-range cards. I think the 360 had something like a x1800 and the PS3 had a crippled GTX 7800.
