Sounds to me like you're too scared to play a game where you can't fight back. Think about it, you don't want to play a horror game unless you feel comfortable. That goes against the entire point of horror games.

You can successfully make a game scary with an over abundance of high tech weaponry at your disposal i.e. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

GameFly has it for $12.80 with the GFDSEP20 coupon, but I don't think it activates on Steam.

Anyhow, I enjoy both Amnesia and Outlast for different reasons. Amnesia gives me goosebumps, but doesn't affect my heart rate. Outlast feels more menacing to me, and raises my pulse at times, but doesn't feel as creepy as Amnesia.

Tuesday can't come soon enough. :-)

$12.80 is super low. I wasn't planning on picking it up until it went on sale but I'm sold. How do you find deals like this?

But S.T.A.L.K.E.R. isn't scary. It's just atmospheric.

Please note, however, that it does not activate on Steam. For that reason I've decided to purchase it on Steam directly, though I'm now unsure after reading Games Radar's review. For reference, they've given Outlast an 8/10, and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs a 5/10. I know they're different games, and their approach to horror differs quite a bit, but still...

This game looks pretty terrible, railroaded and utterly short which was a given soon as crappy Chinese Room were announced as the devs. Enjoy those pre-orders.

Maybe. I guess it depends on the person.
I need something else for a game to be scary. Not just atmosphere alone. Atmosphere is good for setting the mood, but if nothing [scary] happens in the game then it does nothing for me.

STALKER isn't scary to me at all. It just has a good atmosphere. The only times I get scared, even with mods like MISERY, are when I'm being chased by bloodsuckers, and that's because they're invisible, they move fast, and they jump out at you. And even then I don't really get "scared", I just get cold and my neck starts to tingle.

I think of "scary" as hesitating to continue (or trying to rush through a place to avoid scary things), screaming or whimpering, etc. Amnesia was good at this because there were some disturbing images, I didn't know when and where I'd be hunted or what I should expect next, and I felt defenseless.

It's a mental thing for me. The moment you give me a weapon, the fun (horror) is over. Walking into Outlast's mental asylum equipped with with a machine gun would immediately ruin the experience for me. Not being able to fight back is where it's at. It's what gets me.
