Hey guys. I got a new internal hard drive today, which is not my boot drive. I'm just using it for extra storage.
Plugged it in, formatted it, assigned a drive letter, and everything is working. So far, so good.

Now, the weird part comes when I try to remove the old hard drive (which was not the boot drive either.) As soon as I unplug the old hard drive, windows will not boot. It kicks me straight into BIOS. Plug it back in (with the new drive still connected) and Windows boots again like normal. I've looked in the BIOS, and the SSD is still set up as the primary boot device, as it should be.

Can anyone think of a reason why removing the old hard drive, which is not the boot drive, would stop windows from booting? I guess I could just leave it in there, but I'd rather sell it, and it seems silly that I have to leave it in there for the PC to work. Any help is appreciated.

Your Master boot record is on that drive.

Just checking before I do this...this won't make the new hard drive the boot drive, will it?

Does that mean it will need to completely reformat the SSD? Sorry for my questions, but I don't want to create a large amount of work for myself if I don't have to.

nope. it wont touch any of your partitions. I believe room is left over when formatting for just this reason.

Back. Very frustrated.

As soon as the Windows disc boots, and I get to the screen shown under step 2 (it never showed me the screen from step 1) it kills my mouse and keyboard. They both go dark. Then, about 20 seconds later, all 3 of the keyboard lights come on and stay on. Both mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. The power button doesn't respond. I have to flip the switch on my power supply and start over.

I have tried this with the Windows disc in both the DVD and BD drive.

I have tried this with both mouse and keyboard plugged into different USB ports.

I have tried unplugging and replugging both devices after they go dead.

I have tried this with USB Full Initialize turned on and off in the BIOS.

Don't know what else to do...
