How would I do a clean install of Windows 8 when the product key isn't there?

#1the_cajun88Posted 9/10/2013 6:38:24 PM
There is no sticker on the bottom of my ultrabook, the product key is apparently tied to the computer. It came with Windows 8 installed.

I have a Windows 8 Pro disc available to recover from and an external USB disc drive.

I'm planning on getting it to the point where it wants to install, then clicking "repair my computer." Will this work and activate using the product key it already has?

I've tried. That's exactly what I want to do.

The computer tells me that the drive where Windows is installed is locked.

You can download a program called Magicjellybean.
It should find the product key for your windows install.

This is one of those situations where I cannot boot into Windows.

I have access to the command prompt and recovery options, though.

You should be able to recover it without booting into windows though, usually there is a recovery partition you will have to google your model type to see what the prompts are...

If it still doesn't work no matter what you can try contacting Microsoft. If you give them the serial number etc. they may be able to deactivate the license and get you a new one. If it's a new popular model it may work, I'm not sure on their policy any more.

Can't recover or access recovery partition, the drive is locked for some reason. When I access the command prompt, it shows an X: drive instead of the C: drive.

I've taken it apart and everything is connected fine.

The computer is a Samsung np700z5c-s02ub. I am not the original buyer and don't have a receipt so I can't take advantage of the warranty (its been less than a year since this model came out).
