I back up my games and game saves often but what about not doing it over a long period of time

Hard to say really...a hard drive could last a very long time but another drive of the exact model # may only survive for 6 months.

depends on many factors (like magnetic fields/environment), but you should get several years

it really depends on how many ghosts you have in your house.

i have 1 and 5 years old external hdd from western digital and they both working fine till these days. however 2 of my 2tb internal driver failed in 2 years. i had to send them for replacement. one was western digital 2tb black and the other was hitachi 2tb, both 7200rpm, 64mb cache.

*shudder*

this is why it's best to backup often and to multiple media (cloud, optical etc.)

I have several over USB drives over 10 years old, and a 500 GB hard drive about 3 years old, but they're only for storage, nothing else.

Second the ghost factor. Those bastards love eating data. It's like cake to them or something.

You can enslave them and make them backup your data with Norton Ghost, though.
