Dwarf Fortress

I started playing Dwarf Fortress about a year ago and it has proved to one of the most difficult to learn games I have ever played. Anyways I was wondering if anybody has some tips for surviving on a glacier since my last 2 attempts ended up in one of my dwarf going crazy from hunger and killing everyone.

You might be able to start an underground farm on stone if you can get down to the cavern fast enough. Designate a pond and have your dwarves bring up water buckets, but don't let the pond actually fill up. Once the water evaporates, you should be left with mud that you can plant on.

I've never attempted it.
Also, Chess is a game of skill much like all gameplay only video games. So it is pretty mindless if you think about it.-mtjormitch
