Windows 8 restarting instead of shutting down?

#1Dr JackalPosted 9/12/2013 5:26:08 PM
I've been using Windows 8 64 bit for a couple weeks now and this has happened twice. I went into Settings-Power and chose shutdown. The system shutdown. The seconds later it automatically booted back up.

The first time this happened was about 5 days ago. It happened again today. It is a new computer.

Any idea what would cause this?

This happened to me the first time I turned on my win8 machine. It stopped after the first time though, I think I issued a shutdown from the command line

It has happened to me once as well.

Sigh, Windows 8.

Windows R
Type in CMD

In the command prompt type in:
shutdown /s /f

If it restarts after that then what you have is probably a hardware issue.

You make it sound like the system went completely off before it booted again. Windows can't boot up a fully shut down system, can it?

It did. I did research and apparently it can. Apparently a shutdown is just like a "deep sleep" with Windows 8 and not a full shutdown.

My Windows 8 shuts the computer down fully, and restarts from the BIOS screen. Windows 8 didn't universally change what a shutdown is. The problem here is that it is hard to nail down problems with shutdown/sleep. It could be a Windows issue, motherboard, power supply... I have seen it all. If I use my case switch to shut down the computer, it comes right back up. Very annoying.

Did you try to disabling the hibernate feature? This will slow down your boot up times if you don't have an SSD, but it might solve the issue.
