Help with this sub-$200 build

#2132x2zPosted 9/13/2013 11:10:55 AM
First of all you're using an APU which will share the system memory with the video memory. Meaning if you're running windows 7 which takes 1gb and the apu uses 256mb then you're left with little to no ram for running programs. Even firefox if you're multi tasking will take 500mb of ram. (multiple tabs with advertisements going ect)

You're really going to buy separate parts and build yourself a two-hundred dollar PC? Why in god's name would you do that?

Like one other reasonable human being said, buy a chromebook or netbook. That's what you need and you can just use it right out of the box.

If you have a Microcenter near you (one of your parts is listed as Microcenter), then pick up a bundle from there instead. You can get an A10 bundle for a little bit more ($130). You basically get a free Msi motherboard or Gigabyte motherboard (after rebate). A8 bundle is $110 with same free motherboards.

You also want at least 4gb ram and I'm not too sure about that power supply you picked.

What is the point of building a sub $200 build, just go to a pawn shop and grab something sub $200 and save yourself the trouble. Or you could just save up a little more money and buy something at least half way decent.

A friend of mine picked up 3 REALLY good netbooks when they started dying out at like $80 a piece. Pawn shops are viable options for getting something cheap, but in all seriousness, why not just get a bluetooth keyboard and use one of your tablets? If you have 4 of them I'm hoping at least one of them is some junky off brand.

To the guy who says 2GB RAM is terrible.

The PC I have in my bedroom has 2gb with an integrated Intel graphics card; and that's fine for any 2007 and before game, WoW (you could call it a 2004 game but it's definitely improved), it can run TF2 on low as well as Portal.

(Inb4 people assume that PC is my only PC and call me terrible)

Pre-2007 games use up less RAM than Internet browsers, photo editors, etc., so you are not saying much here. 2GB is really not enough if you plan to do some multitasking.

You can tell the apu to use between 32-512mb ram in the bios. And you can make win7 use 700mb ram if you disable aero themes and antivirus. And lower if you dont use a printer (disable spool server).

32x, yes, I'm already aware of how much ram will be utilized between everything I do, thanks.

Though, Wygun, I wasn't aware that that was possible. I'll have to look into that.

Titan, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, there is no Microcenter conveniently close to me, which is actually a bit disappointing, since I did like where the bundles were going.

Those who have suggested going to thrift stores—I promise you, I'm on a tight budget, so the idea of building a computer and asking a PC board meant for gamers about what they thought of the build was not ideal. My city is full of thrift stores on practically every other street (exaggerating), but all the computers I've found were broken, and much too expensive for their condition.
