Graphics card making weird noises

#1_Goggalor_Posted 9/13/2013 11:15:37 AM
So today, my graphics card has been making some odd noises. This is the first time it's ever happened. I figured it may be dirty, so I took my air compressor and blew away any dust there might have been. Still makes the same sound.

This is how it sounds just chilling on my desktop with no apps running: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqFYXlPCcmY

And this is how it sounds when I'm playing a game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6gzekjZkh8

I know it's the fan that's making the noise, but it's never made those sounds before today.

Sounds like the fan is hitting something as it spins. You could try taking the fans off

Sounds like a cable is brushing up against a fan somewhere.

Moved a small red/black cable out of the way, now it's stopped the "clicking" noise, but it seems to be like stopping and starting/having a hard time continuing to spin.

Is it a gigabyte wind force brand? I have one, the fan shroud actually vibrates creating a noise. Its harmless but annoying

Not sure. It's a Geforce 8300 GS card.

I think I might just want to replace it. What's relatively cheap and better than an 8300 GS? Also, noob question, but how do I make sure I buy a card that will fit my tower? Do they have specs for those kinds of things that let you know?

What kind of budget do you have for your new card? The good news is, it won't be too expensive to get a better card than your 8300.

Probably like 100-150 is as high as I could go.

Radeon 7770 is probably the best bang for your buck in that range. 650 Ti is worth a look too.
