I got a 80 gb ps3, and with GTAV coming up and demanding 36 gbs of space just to download ( the games really 21 gb ) I need to upgrade because I can't find anything else to delete. I do realize I'm posting in the pc board because It's a pc component ^_^

http://www.factorydirect.ca/Canada-Ontario-/Computer_Add-Ons/Hard_Drive/Sata/HA6401/_Hard_Drive_640Gb_2_5__5400Rpm_Sata__Rb_/0

Found this for a nice price but the description is saying 3.5" form factor? Can't find anything else yet for around 50$ and 500 gb.

WD blue 250 gb for 50$

The PS3 uses 2.5" HDDs. Both of those say 2.5" so they should work.

Edit: I see where your confusion came from regarding the first one. I looked up the model number from the picture, ST640LM000, and it is indeed a 2.5" drive. You should be good to go with that one.

Yeah, if it's 2.5, it's fine. I changed mine to a tb a while ago.

That drive won't work since it's a 3.5" one. The PS3 uses 2.5" ones like laptops.

I know, still confusing why they have 2.5" in the title. They have another 2.5" harddrive listing with the same description as the first but says 2.5" instead of 3.5", guessing its a typo.

Going to call ahead and see.

So pretty much it just has to be 2.5" sata?

Edit: Just saw your edit, thanks!

In regards to upgrading a PS3 HDD. You want to make sure it's a 2.5 laptop SATA drive. If you are using a PS3 slim. Generally 7200 RPM HDDs are advisable because they have an performance advantage

Ignore the rumors that HDD's faster then 5400 RPM will overheat the system.

Here's a write up on it in fact - http://www.joystiq.com/2007/10/02/7200-rpm-hdd-may-increase-your-ps3s-performance/

Also the PS3 HDD must be in FAT32, so HDDs larger then 2TB may be unrecognizable by the Playstation 3 File System.

Installation is easy and instructions can be found on the official Sony website.

Indeed. I found this one on Newegg's Canadian site, and it isn't that much more money. It'll be a better performing drive.

I have a PS3 Phat, don't want to wait for it to get shipped but might have to wait anyways to get a harddrive to do the back up onto. Isn't there a higher risk to get a broken HDD when going through the mail?

I bought the HDD in my PS3 from Newegg and it works extremely well. Either Newegg or Amazon will suffice. There is no issue with shipping because they generally use UPS.

In fact the computer I'm using right now all of the components were purchased from Newegg. I recommend them.
