My Onkyo TX-NR609 seems to work fine with everything (TV, movies, PS3, PC, etc.) But once I try to play a game through Steam (Dark Souls, Burnout Paradise), I get no sound whatsoever. I'm using a TV as a monitor BTW, and I'm using a HDMI to connect everything (PC->Reciever->TV) Any ideas?

EDIT: sound is fine through my PC monitor, when not using the surround system

Does your receiver have a pcm 2.0/2.1 option? If so try that.

Just for troubleshooting, try setting windows speaker settings to 2.1 instead of 5.1.

Ok, so its something to do with Steam, Origin works (Battlefield 3). I've tried 2.1 as well, and it didnt work in Steam

Are the games you're playing support 5.1 audio through the audio options in game?

umm interesting. In using a onkyo 5.1 receiver with a ht omega clario halo via toslink and it seemed that the surround wasn't that grate compared to my xbox. barley notice the surround on my PC when playing a game lets say farcry 3.
and when i change the settings on the control panel for the sound card to lets say dts the receiver doesn't change the input from DD. it stays at DD.

Also we would like to know if your using a sound card or motherboard built in.
If your using a sound card make sure the motherboard sound card is turned off run>dxdiag
and make sure that the motherboard sound card isn't detected if so go into your motherboard settings before windows turns on and turn off onboard sound. You shouldn't have 2 or more different sound devices or it may cause problems.
