The laptop is right out the box. It was working fine, but then it stopped charging randomly. I tried this method
It didn't work. Does that mean the laptop is defective and I need to ship it back to newegg?

Considering you removed the battery from the Laptop and plugged it directly into the power jack and turned it on and it worked, then it's not the Laptop but most likely the battery itself being defective.
Odd they sent you a laptop with a dud battery. --- Intel i5 3570k | G.Skill 8GB DDR3 | MSI Twin Frozr III HD7950 | Rosewill Capstone 550M | Rosewill Blackhawk | 500GB Seagate | WD 250GB | ASRock Z77 Pro3
Bad battery or bad charger. Buy a universal charger from a store and test it out. If it works then it's the charger if it doesn't then you probably have a dead battery. You can always return the universal charger afterwards.
Again this assumes your computer was working fine otherwise. I suppose it could be something else but I'm just guessing it's most likely the battery/charger.
Oh forgot to mention that just because it runs on AC power without the battery doesn't mean the charger isn't faulty. I had a laptop for years that worked fine as an AC wall jack but wouldn't charge my battery. When I used a different charger the battery would charge fine. So ya that's why I say test it with a different charger before deciding if it's the battery. Would suck to send the battery back and get a new one and find out it was the charger all along. --- 3570k @ 1.260v - 4.6Ghz, GTX 580 @ 980/2106, ASUS Sabertooth z77, 8GB G.Skill Sniper 1600MHZ, Intel 335 SSD (boot).
