Has anyone tried Kerbal Space Program?

I've still not made it to Mun... is what was previously mentioned about mechjeb or whatever it's called true? I'm doing straight up vanilla, then again, mybe my rocket building isnt up to snuff.

MechJeb will definitely make your life much easier... that being said, an over-reliance on MJ can kill some of the fun, but then again the fun you get out of the game is entirely up to you.

I suggest using MJ to perform some maneuvers, watch what it does, then try replicating it on your own without any aids. That way you'll learn by doing, IMHO the most effective way of learning how to do something. Once you feel pretty savvy then you'll be making your own transfers and landings all by your lonesome, and that will feel pretty good.

MJ is still useful in automating many of the routine and tedious tasks that you most likely can do by hand with ease. For example, I love MJ just for the navball functions since I know I can point my craft prograde/retrograde in my sleep, MJ graciously takes care of the little things for me =)

Besides, folks at NASA who play this game have gone on record stating they make extensive use of MechJeb... they went so far as to say that they use autopilots and computer controls all the time on manned missions. If it's good enough for NASA then it's definitely good enough for me!

I love this game. One of the cooler things I did was get five probes to Jool (one to each moon) with a single launch. Pretty pedestrian by some standards, it's no single stage to Laythe and back, but I was happy with it. :D

Mechjeb is like an aimbot for KSP.... I'd use MechJeb if i was testing out several rocket designs to see which ones worked best (since Mechjeb will perform the exact same each time and will show me what I could do under ideal performance) but otherwise, I wouldn't use it at all...

Then again, it's a single player game, so use it if you want to... don't use it if you don't want to.

I actually enjoy the challenge of manually trying to achieve orbit and stuff (although those SAS components are useful). I can see the use of Mechjeb, but I would certainly not use it myself all that often.

Wait for it to be in a humble bundle.

If it ever is, I'd hope it's not like Prison Architect where you pay a whole lot above the average to unlock it... I'm actually slightly curious about Prison Architect, but not $20+ curious. Or even $17.

I'm not quite sure I'm onboard with your analogy. An aimbot pretty much does all the work you'll ever do in an FPS since all you do is aim and shoot... and move too I guess but that isn't exactly helping my argument ;)

In the case of MJ and Kerbal, yes MJ does a lot but it certainly won't help you create an effective rocket design. All the expert guidance in the world won't get that 500+ ton monstrosity off the pad if you don't have the right thrust to weight ratio to do so. The engineering side of Kerbal is significant, I'd say it's easily half the game in addition to the piloting aspects. Also with regards to spaceplanes and rovers, MJ has pretty much no (useful) jurisdiction there IMHO.

To your point, it all comes down to how you want to play the game. If you just want to have a space Lego session and let something else handle the driving then you'll love MJ, however if white knuckle piloting is your thing then MJ will kill the fun for you.

Me, I've done orbital transfers so many times that it's tedious at this point, I'm more than happy to let MJ do the work and I'll focus on the bigger picture... like where I should put kethane refineries and how to design harvesters such that they're efficient enough to turn a profit.

Because I don't really care what you do with your single player game.... but I do feel like you're missing half of the fun if you're using mechjeb... That's just my opinion.
