what if i buy another 770 (this time 4gb) in 2-3 years. will the sli count 4gb or just 2gb still? if that is even compatible

It will match the lowest card, always.

BF3 already can use more than 2 GB of VRAM. mostly it's a matter of what resolution you're playing on and the size of the graphics textures

ok, should i get a 760 instead for 150 less and upgrade to a 4gb card in a year or 2? i play at 1080p and i dont really mid turning games down to high/med but i would prefer not to.

We do not know, but VRAM seems to be the current buzz word. Note however that there are no current titles, even those who are most demanding in terms of VRAM, where 1GB is not sufficient to play the game well in 1080p. While it will obviously play a larger role moving forward, I think its relative importance compared to other characteristics of a GPU is being exaggerated.

Alpha benchmarks confirmed that it can use over 2GB at 1080p when you start turning on AA.

We'll have to wait and see if the complete game uses similar amounts.

Using and needing are the key phrases here.

I would not get 2GB cards at all. Bad upgrade choice IMO. But it really depends on the type of gamer you are....if you don't mind turning AA off and going to medium settings in the future then 2GB would be fine.
