Long story short, my favorite game went offline today, it's a MMO and they shut it down. Is there anyway I can host a server for the game?

Legally? Probably not.

Short answer: No
Long answer: If you get a community dedicated/crazy enough you sometimes end up with server emulators like what happened with Star Wars Galaxies. Key word being community as it's not an easy task

What game?

Earth and Beyond still runs to this day thanks to a dedicated community. That game was probably shut down like 10 years ago.

I wonder if TC is talking about Toontown.

I remember playing that when it first came out. It was interesting. I couldn't play it long because I just had the trial and didn't have a good enough connection, anyway.

I wonder if it was even active right before they shut it down.

You need to emulate everything but if no one has done it before; you won't be able to.

For example Maplestory. There wasn't a way to emulate the game until a group of people came along called OdinMS and recreated all the functions in java. Everything being their own source and they emulated every function to allow the game to work like it did in the official servers.

You can't just host a server willy nilly without any backbone.
