Really fast flash drives or externals?

#1EgniWerdnaPosted 9/20/2013 12:06:53 PM
My band practices at our drummer's house, and I record our practices. At about 9 we have to quit and leave pretty soon after because he has to work.
Anyway, by the end of practice, I have 6 2-hour .wav files. I don't feel like turning off my laptop, packing it up, taking it home where I don't have a space to really set it up, and either mixing the songs or waiting for them to transfer to my desktop.
I tried throwing them on a flash drive, even while cutting, and it was going to take like 30 minutes.

What are my options here? Rendering it would take too long, plus the mix needs some adjusting before exporting as one track so that's not really an option.

I'm not super savvy. Would my external hard drive be much faster? Any faster? Are there really fast flash drives out there?

Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.

You didn't mention how much data you are looking to transfer.

Sandisk Extreme USB 3.0 drives can hit up to 200MB/s writes when used a USB 3.0 port. These are available in 16, 32, and 64GB.

I'm really enjoying my 1TB WD External. They call it "My Passport". Got it for about $80. So far, it transfers good, I was able to backup my entire Steam library in under 2 hours opposed to my older one which took almost the whole day.

I wanted to, but I wasn't sure exactly how big they ended up being. I'd guess 15-20 gigs so 32 should be plenty.
That speed sounds amazing. Thanks!

Remember, your laptop has to have USB3.0 to get those speeds.

Yeah I was just thinking that. Guess I'll have to check on that.
