Open up the resource monitor and find out. It shows disk activity. Or should at least, unless they changed it going from Windows 7 to Windows 8.

A raid array would fix ya right up. Or an SSD. Or a faster drive.

But those are all a bad choice to fix a problem like this. Unless, you know, you have a 5400 RPM drive.

*Assuming you have an HDD*

Run CCleaner (cleaner + registry cleaner). After that, defrag & optimize your hard drive.

This usually lowers the HDD usage for me (there is most likely another issue).
