A Steam Box would actually be a bad idea, here's why.

You want a platform with the price of a PS4 (400$) for example, but made by Valve, but with the specs of a 2000$ PC that runs BF4 at 1080p, 150fps and 200 players.

You want it to have the things of a gaming PC like interchangeable hardware, which would be a problem for the general consumer base, for example, downloading The Witcher 3 and find out the graphics card they just installed isn't compatible.

It would require internet to get the games (Assuming it's going to be digital-based) which was one of the reasons the Xbox One got a gigantic wave of hate.

It would only appeal to a niche base, since most PC gamers play on the PC they already have and if they want to play on their living room with a controller there's Steam Big Picture.

Conclusion: It's not profitable.

EDIT: Ah. Also i forgot, people here hate consoles, YET THEY WANT ONE MADE BY VALVE.

I just realized all of this when i was taking a shower 5 minutes ago.

EA should team up with Samsung and make a console.

I think you should go back to the shower and come back with a better argument.

The target audience doesn't want those things, PC gamers want those things... which is what makes them PC gamers. The Steam Box is supposed to draw in more console users to Steam.

We can discuss it at length after Valve unveils anything at all about the damn thing.

But most of those console users are already getting a PS4 or Xbox One, or in the least of the cases: a Wii U.

If they wanted to join Steam, they would build a gaming PC, or get a Gaming PC, whatever suits them.

No they wouldn't build a gaming PC, because they can't afford one. This topic is stupid, it borders on troll level. How can you be so dense? if I have a $2000 gaming PC, why would I get this? Obviously not made for me.

You can buy a $500 console and a $500 computer and have two crap machines, or you can spend $1000 building your own computer and have the best of both worlds.

Because right now that's their only option. I'm not particularly enthusiastic about the steam box either, but maybe Gabe has found a way to make it work... The problem is, until they announce it, it's just vaporware... They might be about to announce it on Monday (since they're making a big announcement then) but until they do, we know nothing other than the rumors we've heard up till now.

I know I wouldn't be getting a Steam Box. That would be completely redundant.

If Valve release a portable version (I think Gaben said they are looking for portable options as well), then I'll definitely get it.
