Will the Steambox have a disc drive?

The disc drive is a typical point of failure in consoles, removing it would also go a long way toward making the system smaller.

I highly doubt there will be a disc drive in the steam box.

You could buy an external / usb disc drive if you needed one.

That would be silly. It's built around Steam, it's going to be 100% Internet-based distribution.

Bro go tell that to the XBOX ONE.

Well luckily Valve won't have the excuse of 'keep using your last gen steam box then'. They can in good faith say, take it or leave it, this is what it is.

It won't even be big enough to house a disc drive If they're going for the palm-sized little cubes that will just plug right into the back of your tv like I thought they were planning on doing.

Console kids can't live without their used games.

True story.

You can buy physical copies of Steamworks games, though. Like Skyrim.

However, I do agree that people should just get a USB optical drive if they need one. There are computers that are much smaller than optical drives, so a built-in one would really get in the way of possibilities.

Well if SteamOS takes off any computer can potentially be a steambox, like a console only with this one you can upgrade and choose the parts for it...

I would imagine that a $40 optional drive would be available.
